Huh.

> No risk to earth

> Passing inside Mars orbit

Seems pretty close to me.

Do the experts still not deal at all with the potential charge activity of comets? It's been awhile since I've dug on the topic (and much longer since reading on Encke, Biela, and theories related).

You are absolutely correct. Comets passing through plasma is a very uncertain thing, you sure do not want to pass through the tail of one.

You know, the notion that Biela was connected to the Chicago and Peshtigo fires was one I heard among greatly elder farmers in the Upper Midwest. That would have been I guess in their parents' or grandparents' time. They all said that the handed-down local intel was that the fires "came from the sky." Not smashy rocks (the usual Newtonian notion) but something else. Gases and streaks of fire were mentioned, not lightning or Space Rocks.

That reminds me, I haven't looked in on what the Beta Taurids are doing (the meteors that iirc Encke was connected with, overlapping with time of year of the "Tunguska event").

I remember reading about the Chicago fires, that they all started pretty much simultaneously and didn't spread from a single source. There were also showers of meteorites and a comet at the time, it seems likely they were involved.

Velikovsky wrote of cometary Venus, it's CO2 atmosphere dragged into a magnetic tail that the Earth passed through, when the gases connected with the Oxygen in our atmosphere, Hydrocarbons began to rain down across the globe causing terrible fires and suffocating fumes.
