I thought there would have been a bit more media interest in this topic but I've not seen anything else about it.
My guess is it was the bright ark flash of electric discharge as a small comet came into electrical contact with Saturn - another Shoemaker–Levy 9 perhaps.
There should be some evidence of it in the atmosphere, like the huge storm-bruises Jupiter experienced. My little telescope is not sufficient to see Saturn in detail or I would take some pics of it.
Did they assess/rule out possibility of a discharge phenomenon?

Arc flash was my very first thought when I saw the images, but I'm biased toward that sort of explanation.
