As I mentioned in a recent post Largest ever comet discovered near Neptune, there are some very unusual attributes of this comet which raise many questions. Not only is it the largest yet seen, although it is still in the frigid outer regions of Neptune’s orbit, it is already outgassing a huge tail and may have been doing so for several years already.
It’s orbit is extremely elongated suggesting it has travelled inwards toward the Sun from a distance of at least 0.7 light years. It will reach perihelion in January 2031 at a distance of about 10AU from the Sun, or approximately the orbit of Saturn.
